Writer's Block: AKA

What's the story behind your username?

Simple and boring: "vb" = Virginia Beach, my hometown and "seth" is self explanitory.

My first choice "blessedmessiah" was taken at the time. Last thing I heard was that the owner of that blog met an untimely death and the user name is in the cue to be purged. One name change token and its mine!

storm

because deep down I am still a big nerd

As many of you know one of my many interests is meteorology. Here at the farm I have a complete weather station set up. I actually supply data to the National Weather Service/NOAA. Tropical systems have always been especially fascinating. Although Hanna has ruined my plans for the weekend (further work on the yard to get it ready for [info]die7fox and [info]putaindemerde's upcoming wedding) this will be the first tropical storm/ hurricane that will be tracked by my system.

For anyone who is interested below are the current conditions here on the farm. The data is real time and self updating. You can keep track of what is going on here at Turkey's Rest as Hanna pays us a visit, at least as long as we have power here. The worst of the storm is not supposed to pass through here until Saturday afternoon, probably between 12 and 3. The first rain started falling about an hour ago (18:00 EDT). The wind is still fairly calm although I expect it to pick up as the night progresses.

Heat, House, Visitors

The heat-- ZOMG. May was a chilly month for us here on the Eastern Shore. Now June is showing us the opposite end of the thermal spectrum. The last three days have seen the temperature at the house nipping at the heals of 100. Last time I checked the temperature at the house was 94. This time of year usually brings with it low electric bills. Looks like that will not be the case. As [info]die7fox put it in his journal its not yet time for me to see my "electric meter whirl around like a margarita blender". On a positive note we should be getting a credit on our next bill. Our electric company is a cooperative and in July the annual profits are distributed to members. It probably will not be much, maybe $50. Every little bit helps.

Despite the heat, we spent most of this past weekend working out in the yard. We landscaping the front yard last month. So far I am happy with the way that things are turning out.  We have done some beds around the a few of the larger trees. This weekend we completed a bed along one side of the driveway. We bought a tiller last month and it has really helped cut down on a lot of work. I plan on posting some pictures soon. Tonight is grass cutting night so I will be spending about 2 hours on the lawn tractor before spending another half hour doing edging. Fun!!

We have been visited by a number of wonderful people during the last few weeks. Three weeks ago positron and his handsome BF drove over from DC to spend the weekend with us. I had a great time although I wish that I had gotten the opportunity to converse with positron. He and I share many of the same core values, although the way we have incorporated them into our lives is different. Next time I see him he is all mine!! The same weekend [info]podling stopped by on her way down to Hampton Roads. She stayed over Friday night. We all stayed up way too late and probably drank a little more than we should have. Who cares though because we had a damn good time.

The following weekend was Memorial Day weekend. As he did last year [info]putaindemerde spent the weekend with us. This time though he brought the dashingly handsome and perspicacious [info]abstrusedude with him. The man has a quick wit and kept us entertained throughout the weekend. I enjoyed his company and look forward to seeing him again. [info]iamglory and [info]xzaxza also came up for the weekend. Poor [info]putaindemerde did not feel well for part of the weekend and spent the time resting. We spent most of our time enjoying each others company and hanging out at the house. Saturday night we played a drunken game of Family Feud. There was lots of yelling and bickering but it was all in good fun. The highlight of the game was all of us trying to get [info]d2leddy to understand that the point of the game is not to always give the right answers, but instead to give the answers that most people chose in a survey. I think that after the end of the first game he understood although for the rest of the night he remained indignant about the concept of the game.

This afternoon I have to work on what I think is the most stupid report that I have to do. It is a report for one of my government funding sources. Most of the information is useless. The form is an Excel workbook with multiple pages. Each page is full of date is what is probably a 6 point font. I hate the damn thing. At least I only have to do it once a month. Better get started because it will likely take me the rest of the day to finish it.

He gave up playing golf

The president was asked in an interview yesterday how he personally acknowledges the lives lost and the many sacrifices that our soldiers and their families have given in the Iraq War.

His answer...He says that he has stopped playing golf.

The motherfucker stopped playing golf. He stopped playing golf!! He could work with charities helping soldiers and veterans. He could visit the families of the soldiers who have lost their lives. He could visit the hospitals where wounded soldiers are recovering. He could attend church and spend his time there praying for our soldiers...

But no, the motherfucker gave up playing golf.

In his words:

“I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf.I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.”

He stopped playing golf.

I feel like vomiting. Really, not kidding. HE GAVE UP GOLF.

There really is a special place in hell for him. A really, really special place.
